Vietnam’s agricultural products are highly regarded by China, emphasizing the need for sustainable development through the evaluation of production organization, meeting criteria and standards, and developing deep processing and packaging mechanisms.
In an interview on the sidelines of the China-ASEAN Expo and the 20th China-ASEAN Summit on Trade and Investment in Nanning City, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Phung Duc Tien revealed that on September 16, the Ministry signed a memorandum of understanding with Guangxi Province (China) to establish a disease-free zone and construct a processing plant in the border region between the two countries.
Additionally, both sides are collaborating to develop a source area to serve import and export activities. This source area encompasses livestock farming, cultivation, and aquaculture.
Deputy Minister Tien noted that in the first eight months of the year, Vietnam’s agricultural exports to China reached USD 7.28 billion, a 9.8% increase compared to the same period last year, with a trade surplus of USD 5.28 billion, up 33.3%.
Vietnam’s agricultural products are highly distinctive and highly appreciated by China. However, to ensure sustainable development, we must review our production organization, including the establishment of source areas that meet criteria and standards, as well as the development of deep processing and packaging mechanisms.
In the coming time, Vietnam will continue to negotiate agreements, particularly for traditional export items such as watermelon, cold lychee, chili, and medicinal herbs. If we can streamline these product categories, trading will be much more favorable, and the growth rate will be significantly higher.
At present, Vietnam’s agricultural products account for 21.7% of the entire Chinese market, while the United States accounts for 20.4%, and Japan for 7.5%.
“It can be seen that the Chinese market is crucial for Vietnam’s agricultural products due to geographical proximity and similar consumption habits. The Party and the State attach great importance to the relationship with China and this populous market,” Deputy Minister Tien emphasized.
According to Mr. Tien, the China-ASEAN Expo (CAEXPO) is a vital event for China and ASEAN countries in terms of trade and investment cooperation. Vietnam’s participation in this expo is notable, with a large number of businesses and the largest booth.
For many years, promotion and product introduction have been essential, contributing significantly to broad dissemination. Government attention will elevate Vietnam-China agricultural trade relations to new heights.

As the chosen local representative at the “Beautiful City” exhibition area at this expo, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Cong, Vice Chairman of the Son La Provincial People’s Committee, explained that the exhibition booth has an area of 184 square meters with the theme “Son La – The Clean Agriculture Hub.”
The booth showcases hundreds of products, aiming to introduce the province’s potential, strengths, preferential policies for attracting economic and social development projects, and products that promote culture and tourist attractions.
Significantly, the Son La booth focuses on trade, introducing clean agricultural products, displaying four fresh fruit products (mangoes, lychees, dragon fruits, and passion fruits), and 52 processed agricultural products (coffee, tea, cassava starch, sugar, longan, etc.) to attract foreign partners.
Mr. Cong emphasized that this expo is an opportunity to convey the message that “Son La is not only a beautiful land with numerous scenic spots and rich cultural identity but also has the potential and strength to develop into Vietnam’s clean agricultural hub.”
